Can I take test prep classes at Kaplan if I use financial aid?

I want to go to graduate school, and need to take the GRE. However, I am going to art school now, and there aren’t really any classes to prep me for this test.

I’m using financial aid, and it says that I cannot take classes at two different schools during one semester. However, if I take a course at a place like Kaplan, which preps me for the test, will this cause a problem? It isn’t really taking a class for credits or anything, but it’s a course to prep me for the GRE test.

Marie:

Kaplan is not considered an institution of post-secondary education, and classes that you take there will have no impact on your eligibility for financial aid.

Taking a course at Kaplan is just like taking an adult education course in photography at the local high school. Neither your college, nor the Federal aid program are the least bit concerned.

Of course, you won’t be able to apply for – or receive aid to help PAY for your courses at Kaplan – but I don’t suspect that you thought that you could.

Take all of the Kaplan classes that you need to score well on the GRE. Good luck!

i want to take the gre. can i use old test prep books or is it better to use the most up to date books?

Depends on how old we’re talking. The GRE underwent a change in 2001 so you can discard any books before 2002. Other than that, you should be aware that older books won’t tell you about the computer adaptive test (CAT), they’ll assume that you’ll take it with a pen and pencil. It’s not such a big deal, but you should just be aware that the CAT places more emphasis on the questions you answer in the beginning. You can download the PowerPrep software from ETS and take a couple CAT practice tests at home. It’s exactly like the real thing. Other than that, the questions are really the same and if you study from a book a few years old you shouldn’t have any surprises.

There’s also supposed to be some new GRE questions in the future, but I only saw them on my experimental section. You should be aware of them.

http://www.TestingIsEasy.com

In the second part of a six-part series, Mike Barrett explains the best physical orientation for tutoring a student (or teaching a group of students). Creating the best environment will let the student know that you are on the ’same team,’ and make your sessions less confrontational and more productive.

can I SMOKE a cigarette during the gre break at the testing center?

I am going to take the gre on the aug 26 of 2010. I find it very difficult during the intermissions to calm myself after taking the verbal section, and while getting ready myself for the quantitative section. The only thing that has the capacity to calm me down is a cigarette. So, I am very curious to know if this is possible. My testing centre: Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.

I guess that depends whether the instructors would allow it or not. Smoking can in fact, alleviate people’s tensions and stress, but its odor can affect certain ppl. Think about it. some ppl are very immune to smoke, and can pass out easily. Even though smoking can be permitted and helps allay people’s minds, think about the harm you are making to ppl and ur environment. I suggest you to think some other ways to calm yourself. This is planet earth. There are numerous ways everywhere!
