Are there any scholarships or grants to pay to take the GRE?

Hi, I need to take the GRE to get into grad school, mainly so that I can stop paying on these undergrad student loans. Anyways, are there any programs or anything that can pay for or help pay for the GRE test? Funds are very low right now. Thanks in advance.

What type of prep class, in-class, private tutor or online, did you take? Who taught it (kaplan, princeton review, etc)? Did you like it? Was it helpful?

I just used the Kaplan Premiere book. It had some great strategies in it that I used during the test. There’s really not much you can "study" for the test, though. You just have to learn strategies for solving the problems. I didn’t think that warranted paying for a class.

What is the best way to prepare? Is it really necessary to take the GRE General and the GRE Psychology?

It may not be necessary to take both. Nearly all Psych grad programs require the GRE general exam (places like Argosy and UoP may not). For the programs I’ve looked into, the GRE Psych test is only required for Clinical Psych programs, but it is recommended for some other programs. You’ll need to look at the requirements where you think you might go.

Princeton Review has a great Psych book. It has several chapters covering the basics and 1 practice test. REA also has a great psych book with 6 practice tests and it explains the answers. I’d recommend both.

If you are planning to take on the GRE Psych test, it is only offered three times a year: Oct., Nov., and April. November of this year is already sold out in several locations so you’ll need to determine pretty quickly if you need to take the GRE Psych test and if you need to take it this year.

What’s the best GRE test prep book?

I am looking for a good test prep book to study from. I originally scored a 1050 and that’s definitely not good enough! I know that I need to beef up on some stuff but I want a book to do so, since I didn’t study really for the last one. Thanks for the help.
Also just to add . . . I have a 3.62 GPA and a double major in history and English. What score should I shoot for to get into my selected graduate program since they don’t have scores posted?

Which area did you need to most work in? Were your scores similar or was one significantly higher than the other? That will help you know where to study.

ETS, Kaplan, and Princeton Review are all very good. You should probably pick up a couple so you get some variety. If money is an issue, you might pick up the one you like the best and look at used bookstores for others. They sometimes have GRE books.

What is considered to be a good score on the Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Molecular Biology GRE Subject Test? How does the "quality" of the score vary across the echelons of universities in the US? (Specifically, I’m looking for score ranges).

A score above 680-700 is considered above averages. Some upper-tier schools list higher ones, especially for international students. You will want a percentile above 80-85% (the score for that varies a bit.

To people from L.A. area or nearby, have anyone try these two GRE classes: PowerScore GRE and Sherwood Test Prep?

People who have tried these, can you please give me some comments or suggestion, such as which class is better, and how so? which one do you recommend?

I am deciding which one I am going to take for my GRE preparation, so if anyone can offer me some help, it will help a lot! Thank you~

I took the Powerscore GRE class in NYC last fall and liked it a lot. Much more thorough than I expected and the book was a real help after the class. It was a good experience and it helped me feel a lot better about the test. FWIW, I’ve been recommending it to friends of mine taking the GRE.

How much time is recommened to study for the GRE general exam?

So I have a couple of months before I apply to a PhD program for psychology. Most applications are due by December. However, the GRE test is required for the application. The exam is on or around October 24, 2009 and I’m a little worried that I will not be able to prepare myself in enough time. How much time would you recommend to prepare for the GRE? And how many hours a day if you only had like a month to study???

Spend as much time as you can each day but do not overdo it since you may then run into diminishing or even negative returns./
