To all the kids in school,
across the land,
hear my battle cry!
Rise up,
take a stand!
Say you are not going to tolerate it anymore.
You have greater expectations for your self.
Refuse the ignorance of archaic traditions.
Accept the reality of your K-12 limitations.

You pace up and down the trauma unit lobby of your grade
hoping the facts you crammed into your skull at the last, fleeting moments
before the test were enough to satisfy the bleeding heart of your educational ego.

It’s not worth it.
I promise you, you will not use it.
Do not let your Math teacher fool you,
calculators have existed for years and they’re not going anywhere.
Do not let your History teacher fool you,
false idolization is not an adequate education.
Do not let your administrators fool you,
those test scores you’re spending countless hours studying for
are nothing more than soulless statistics.

We are constricting our kids from what they need.

It was a lie to tell me I needed math past age 15.
I knew I wasn’t going to be an engineer or scientist or use math in any desired environment.
It was unfair to sing to me sugar-coated, jingoistic, bedtime stories
and call it history class.
It was heartbreaking to tell me my SAT scores made my educational future flat at best.

Unless you plan on making a living appearing on game shows, tests are of no use to you.
You take them because your teachers tell you to.
You take them because the colleges want you to.
You take them because it’s a business.
Because people are profiting from it.
All those test-prep books and test-prep classes and test-fees cost a great deal of money
& you think it would be free to have some non-profit organization judge you objectively.
You take these tests because you’re young and naïve.
And the people who are supposed to be
leading you into the future
are treating you like a consumer.

Rise up.
Take control of your education.
